What Every Magic Valley Homeowner Should Know
Test smoke detectors monthly
Press and hold the test button until the alarm sounds. If it doesn't sound, replace the battery immediately. A detector that doesn't respond to the test button won't respond to smoke either.
Replace batteries every year — or go sealed
Standard 9V batteries should be replaced annually. Better yet, upgrade to a sealed 10-year lithium unit — you'll never need to replace the battery for the life of the detector.
Replace detectors every 10 years
Smoke detectors have a lifespan. After 10 years, the sensing chamber degrades and the unit becomes unreliable — even if it still chirps when you test it. Check the manufacture date on the back.
Install CO detectors if you have an attached garage or gas appliances
Idaho code requires carbon monoxide detectors in homes with attached garages or fuel-burning appliances. CO is odorless and colorless — you won't know it's there without a detector.
Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen
Kitchen fires are the leading cause of residential fires. An ABC-rated extinguisher mounted near the exit — not next to the stove — gives you a fighting chance in the first 30 seconds.
Plan and practice your escape route
Every bedroom needs two ways out. Walk your family through the plan at least twice a year. Pick a meeting spot outside — a neighbor's mailbox, a tree — and make sure everyone knows it.
